The Guernsey Tapestry

Spanning 1,000 years of Guernsey history through a sense of local pride and meticulous embroidery, the Bailiwick of Guernsey Millennium Tapestry is an enormous piece of drapery displaying the rich heritage of the Channel Islands, and is one of the most fascinating attractions in Guernsey!

Sewn together over a two-year period by local residents as a millennium project , the tapestry features ten embroidered panels, with each representing a century from the years 1000-2000.  Incidentally, because Guernsey also has ten parishes, every panel bears a different crest to signify each one.  Frozen in time, the local significance exhibited through the panels offer unique insight into the history of Guernsey.

    The Guernsey Tapestry

The tapestry itself is situated within a purpose-built gallery in the Dorey Centre, which was originally a 19th-century church in St. Peter Port.  Each of the ten panels is accompanied by an audio guide (available in English, German and French) which unravels the island’s history from century to century.  Several of the people who originally stitched the tapestry now work as volunteers at the exhibit, and enjoy sharing stories of their experience doing so, as well as giving you deeper insight into the events depicted on each panel.

The Guernsey Tapestry is maintained by the Millenium Tapestry Trust, and was financed through the generosity of the local community.  As such, donations are much appreciated!
